Christmas is right around the corner and with it comes lights, jolly music and Christmas movies. One of the most famous holiday-focused movies is “A Christmas Story” which humorously chronicles a boy’s mission to obtain a Red Rider BB Gun for Christmas. The film has become a cult classic since its 1983 release and has spawned classic imagery such as a pink bunny costume, a pair of broken glasses and—most famous of all—a tacky leg-shaped lamp. To celebrate the film, many ornament companies have created Christmas tree decorations, talking figurines and other fanfare. In November of 2016, a startup company known as Deck the Home released a laser light projector rife with “A Christmas Story” imagery.
Deck the Home is a new company that has yet to reach its one-year milestone but it aspires to become a leader in indoor and outdoor décor for a range of holidays—Christmas chief among them. Their “A Christmas Story” premium laser light emits red and green illuminations as well as depictions of the movie’s iconic elements. Laser projectors are nothing new—dozens of companies ranging from Brookstone to LaserWorld offer models such as “Cascading Motion,” “Christmas Lightshow” and “Snowflake Laser” which all illuminate homes with easy installation. Although other laser light system are very similar, the most recent one offered by Deck the Home is the only light projection-based laser decoration that pays homage to the classic and beloved “A Christmas Story” film. The laser works as advertised and was designed to withstand weather conditions subsequently making it long-lasting. “Our products are designed for people who don’t want the hassle of stringing or hanging decorations, but still want to go all out,” said company co-founder Ty Simpson. “We target people who want to make an impression and have something unique and different.” While the movie imagery does lend the laser light set a kitschy quality in place of the elegance of dot or snowflake models, it also affords it a charming humor and festiveness that is ideal for the month of December.
Deck the Home has big plans. Although they currently only offer four products, they are actively anticipating adding many more in 2017—especially pertaining to licensed merchandise intended for parties, sporting events and other joyous occasions. “We have many surprises in store for next year that will make it easy to setup and power your favorite laser light,” Ty proudly declared. “Seeing the reaction on people’s faces when they see these little units light up a whole house is priceless.” Deck the Home aims to be successful for many years to come by monitoring the market for the latest innovative technology that can led itself to holiday décor. Despite the fact that they design their own products, they also work with licensing agencies as was the case with the “A Christmas Story” projector. “That movie seemed like a natural fit for our technology,” Ty explained. “There are so many laugh out loud, iconic moments from that movie that it was hard to narrow it down to just seven images. Putting this product together and the accompanying promotional videos was so much fun. It was a great way to kick start our roster.”
