Javier Navarette "Mirrors" (Lakeshore Records)

The score of "Mirrors" is a bit of a puzzle to me. I recall seeing the trailer for this movie and thought it was a straight horror film. It had a strong cast...Kiefer Sutherland,Amy Smart and fine character actor Jason Flemyng.  The director was Alexlandre Aja who directed the violent remake of the classic horror film "The Hills Have Eyes".

But Javier Navarette, who scored Del Toro's excellent "Pan Labyrinth" has taken a exisiting piece of music by Spanish composer Isaac Albeniz and made a score more based in mystery or suspense then horror. The piece,"Asturias" is a slow building piece, heavy on the strings and pacing. You keep waiting for the shock to the system which really never comes.  But when Navarette strikes out on his own, backed by the fine City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the horror elements do kick in...

But the story behind "Mirrors" sounds more like Star Trek then Friday the 13th,with a alternate world being the main culprit behind a bunch of weird happenings. It begs the question....how do you market a movie that wants to be a horror yet is is sci-fi in nature? Easy...you make the music just like the movie...a true "whodunit"!
