Carter Burwell is fast approaching becoming the composer you "must" have if you're going to have a kick ass score. Face it,the man is on a roll....scoring the 2007 Oscar winning "No Country For Old Men",the critical hit "Before the Devil Knows Your Dead" and this very dark comedy "In Bruges".
The story of two Irish hitmen (Colin Farrell and Brendon Gleeson) who have botched a hit far beyond forgiveness and the aftermath is described as a dark comedy but the music sort of leans the other way..mixing very sad pieces with songs by Townes Van Zandt,The Dubliners and the Pretenders. Burwell seems to have to have his own opinion of the story and while end song "2000 Miles" from the Pretenders is the lightest song on the CD,its what comes beforehand that makes this score so starkly bittersweet.
Burwell, who has done every Coen Brothers except one and also enjoys working with left of center directors such as Spike Jonze. "In Bruges" is a score you'll want to have for those too bright and sunny days.
Highly Recommended
