"The Midnight Meat Train" - Robb Williamson and Johannes Kolbilke (Lakeshore Records)

I recently reviewed here perhaps the best score of the past 10 years in "The Dark Knight",which was scored by two giants in movie music,Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard. These two masters created a vital, instant classic of a score and perhaps have started a new trend by having two great composers joining forces on major films.

Having said that,I was pretty hopeful when Clive Barker's "The Midnight Meat Train" also recieved the two composer treatment. But sadly, this score falls WAY short in this department. How one can turn a story about a man struggling against a violent and unstoppable fate into a sparse, boring score is terrible. Robb Williamson and Johannes Kobilke, who also teamed up for the slightly better score for "Pathology",must have not read the story that this movie was based on.

There is nothing remotely scary or suspenseful about this score. No strings that create fear,no percussion that pounds you in your seat, heart pounding...just a safe,sci-fi type of synth type of score. You never feel scared, just a bit blase and bored...not a good sign for a movie designed to see how bad it wants to make you feel uncomfortable.

I recommend the film but not this score.
