The story of Sweeney Todd started as a play,in fact a musical. Based on a real story in England,the demon barber of Fleet Street was no singing goof but a gory killer who found himself executed by England herself.
Burton,instead of playing the story straight,kept the singing elememts intact...showing off a side of Depp not yet seen. Its a chance that pays off as Depp's Todd is indeed a dark,twisted mind,willing to kill anyone and have them end up as dinner as prepared by Helana Bonham Carter.
